Its strongest role? Short-form impact. Logo lockups, product names, section headers, shop signage, social banners—yes, absolutely. On the ceramics studio’s stoneware tags, it held up beautifully at 14 pt with tight tracking, reading clear and characterful even under gallery lighting. On their website header, set large and centered against raw linen texture, it gave instant gravitas without shouting.
But—and this matters—I didn’t use it for body copy. Not even close. No alternates, ligatures, or swashes are included (it’s a focused, no-frills display face), and there’s only one weight: bold. That’s intentional. It’s not meant to be versatile across sizes or tones—it’s meant to command attention in moments that need anchoring. Trying it at 10 pt on a packaging ingredient list? Pairing It Without Overcomplicating Things
Because Ground Forces brings so much personality, pairing is about contrast—not competition. I landed most confidently with clean, neutral sans serifs: a restrained geometric like Inter or Manrope for body text and captions. Their even rhythm lets Ground Forces breathe and dominate where it should. For editorial or packaging layouts, a quiet serif—think Charter or Lora—works beautifully as a counterbalance: classic structure meeting rugged presence. Avoid pairing it with other distressed or heavily textured fonts. Two strong personalities in one layout don’t harmonize—they argue.
I also tried it with a delicate script for a limited-edition product variant. It worked—but only because the script was used once, at tiny scale, as a subtle flourish beneath the main name. Don’t lean on Ground Forces to carry warmth or whimsy. It’s not built for that. It’s built for clarity, conviction, and craft with grit.

No multilingual glyphs beyond basic Latin-1 (so no extended diacritics or Cyrillic support), and no variable axis—just one robust, well-hinted bold weight. If your project needs language coverage beyond English, or fine-tuned optical sizing, look elsewhere.
And please—before dropping Ground Forces into client deliverables—check the license. It’s a commercial font, yes, but usage rights vary. Merchandise? Fine. Website embedding? Check if the license covers self-hosted webfonts. Print-on-demand templates? Confirm redistribution terms. I’ve seen great work stalled over overlooked licensing details—and it’s always easier to clarify upfront than rework mid-project.
A Realistic Verdict
Ground Forces won’t solve every typography problem. It won’t replace your go-to sans for UI or your trusted serif for long-form storytelling. But if you’re designing for a brand that values authenticity over polish, substance over slickness—if your client makes tools, brews coffee, restores furniture, teaches workshops, or sells handmade goods—this font delivers something rare: presence with purpose. It doesn’t ask to be liked. It asks to be believed.
Use it where you want people to pause, recognize, and remember—not because it’s loud, but because it feels earned.
